Is Cancun Safe For Tourists?

When planning your trip to Cancun, you might have concerns about whether Cancun is safe. We’re not going to lie, there have been instances of crime in Cancun in the past. However, we felt completely safe during our visit, and most tourists have no issues whatsoever.

Since then, Cancun has increased its security measures by adding surveillance cameras and increasing police presence. Additionally, local authorities are working to prioritize tourists’ well-being.

As with visiting any destination, we advise you to take precautions such as keeping an eye on your belongings, being aware of your surroundings, and avoiding walking alone at night. Follow these precautions to stay safe throughout your time in Cancun.

What Are The Best Months To Go To Cancun?

When you’re planning your trip to Cancun, the month you visit is an important factor to consider! Especially if you don’t want to visit when there’s a high chance of rainy days or heat that’s too uncomfortable to walk around.

December to April would be the best months to visit Cancun for your getaway. The weather is mild and pleasant for walking around the city. You will also experience little to no chance of rain.

As far as the temperature, you can expect it to range from the mid-to high-80s, so you can lie on the beach comfortably.

Overall, Cancun is an amazing destination year-round, but if you want perfect temps and a low chance of rain, planning your vacation between December and April is a no-brainer.

Our visit to Cancun

If you’re wondering when to plan a trip to Cancun, we suggest starting three to four months ahead. Personally, whenever we visit, that’s when we usually begin preparing.

By planning in advance, you’ll have the opportunity to secure deals on flights and lodging. If you are anything like us, you will have time to compare prices and find options that fit your budget. You’ll also have the flexibility to make changes, such as adjusting dates or choosing different hotels. Like with any travel destination, booking early can save you money.

Book A Trip To Cancun

Planning a trip to Cancun with Cheap Caribbean

With a variety of online travel platforms available, booking a trip to Cancun has never been easier. When booking your trip to Cancun, we suggest using Cheap Caribbean. For 23 years, Cheap Caribbean has built relationships all over the Caribbean, including Cancun.

They provide a spectacular, mostly all-inclusive beach getaway at very competitive prices. They offer the lowest-priced packaged flight + stay deals on the internet. If you find a lower price on a US-based travel site, they’ll match it and add $25.

Maybe you prefer a luxury resort to settle into and barely need to leave the property; our Fairmont Mayakoba review is worth checking out since we spent seven nights there.

Get International Travel Insurance For Cancun

Travel insurance for planning a trip to Cancun or anywhere is a must-have. When choosing a policy, look for coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost or stolen items. We also recommend that if you plan to do activities like diving or other adventure sports, make sure they are included in your coverage.

Providers like World Nomads or Allianz Global Assistance, our favorite, offer comprehensive travel insurance plans that you can tailor according to your needs.

How To Get Around Cancun

If you’re wondering how to get around Cancun, there are plenty of ways to get around the city.

Public Buses

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to get around Cancun, consider taking the public bus. Buses run on the clock every 5 minutes and operate 24/7, making travel within the city and the Hotel Zone easy and convenient.

Bus fare is inexpensive, as a one-way ticket is 50 cents in USD. So, it’s a good option if you’re on a budget but want to get around town. Routes R1 and R2 will take you to the downtown area and Hotel Zone, which has the main attractions.

Taxis

If you prefer not to take the bus, another option is taking a taxi in Cancun. They are more convenient but will be more expensive than the bus. Be sure to negotiate a price in advance since the taxis aren’t metered in Cancun.

Ride-Sharing Apps

Uber is available in Cancun and is another option for getting around. Prices tend to be higher than buses, but cheaper than taxis. At least with Uber, you know the price upfront, so you don’t need to negotiate the fare. Keep in mind, Uber is not allowed at the Cancun Airport, so you will have to take a taxi from the airport. They are also not allowed on any hotel property in the Hotel Zone, so you will have to walk onto the road.

Car Rentals

Another way to get around Cancun is by renting a car. One advantage of having your own car is going at your own pace. It is also convenient if you plan day trips to Tulum or Playa del Carmen; you can stop at some amazing cenotes along the way. Be sure to have a valid driver’s license, and an International Driving Permit is highly advised.

Before you rent a car, we want to make you aware that traffic in Cancun can be a little chaotic, and parking in the city can add stress.

Bicycles

If you’re staying within the Hotel Zone, consider renting a bike. However, we recommend you ride with caution, as it doesn’t seem to be very bike-friendly.

Ferries

If you want to visit nearby islands like Isla Mujeres, then you must take a ferry. We enjoyed the Ultramar, which runs regularly from Cancun to Isla Mujeres.
